Because curly hair tends to be drier by nature, Fekkai says to also avoid non-soluble silicones, which can make the hair more brittle. “Alcohol tends to dry the hair, which creates a bigger opportunity for breakage and harm to your precious strands.” Nai'vasha says avoiding as much alcohol as possible is best. “Sulfates are known to be overly efficient in removing dirt and debris from the hair, which for textured hair results in a dry, crunchy, desert wasteland,” Dellinger says. In addition to shea butter, Fekkai also recommends monoi, jojoba, and argan oils are also excellent oils for curls.
